The Philadelphia Eagles, reigning Super Bowl champions, are sitting pretty at 4-1—but don’t let that record fool you. Behind the scenes, cracks are starting to show, and their path to a repeat championship is looking anything but smooth.
Last February, the Eagles soared to victory on the wings of a team that dominated on both offense and defense. Their defensive line famously dismantled Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, while their postseason offense quietly racked up 11 touchdowns in just two games. But fast forward to 2025, and the story is drastically different.
On paper, the Eagles are tied for the most wins in the NFL. Yet, their offense has taken a nosedive. Currently ranked 30th in total offense and 31st in passing yards per game, they’re a shadow of their former selves. To put it in perspective, last season they were 8th in offense and 7th in points per game, with a rushing attack that ranked second in the league. This year? Their ground game has plummeted to 25th in the NFL, averaging a mere 99.8 yards per game.
And this is the part most people miss: the decline isn’t just about numbers—it’s about identity. The Eagles’ once-feared running game, led by 2024 Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley, has all but vanished. After rushing for over 2,000 yards last season, Barkley is now averaging under 75 yards per game on a meager 3.2 yards per carry. “We’re identifying what we need to improve on,” Barkley told reporters, acknowledging the struggle. But is that enough?
The passing game isn’t faring much better. Quarterback Jalen Hurts, who once compensated for offensive shortcomings with his downfield prowess, is now struggling to find his rhythm. This has led to public frustration from his receivers, most notably A.J. Brown. After a Week 4 win, Brown skipped post-game interviews, instead posting a cryptic Bible verse on social media: “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene.” Ouch. Brown’s production has also taken a hit, projected to fall far short of his 2024 numbers.
But here’s where it gets controversial: is the offense’s collapse a result of individual failures, or is it a systemic issue? DeVonta Smith hinted at the latter after a recent loss, stating the offense was “not on the same page.” This disarray led to a closed-door meeting between Hurts, Brown, and Barkley—a clear sign that tensions are rising. Yet, despite these struggles, the Eagles are still winning. How? And more importantly, can they sustain it?
Head coach Nick Sirianni remains optimistic, drawing parallels to last season’s early struggles. “You buckle down. You find solutions,” he said. But with a rushing attack in freefall and a passing game that’s sputtering, the question remains: Can the Eagles fix what’s broken before it’s too late?
