Disney and YouTube TV's Contentious Deal: ESPN and ABC Return to Streaming Service After a Two-Week Blackout
After a nearly two-week absence, Disney's linear channels, including ABC, ESPN, FreeForm, and FX, will return to YouTube TV, following a new carriage deal between the entertainment giant and the tech giant. This agreement comes after a highly publicized dispute, with Disney executives expressing frustration over YouTube's lack of customer consideration and their desire to eliminate competition.
A YouTube spokesperson shared, 'We're pleased to announce an agreement with Disney, ensuring our service remains valuable for subscribers and adaptable for future offerings. Subscribers will see the return of ABC, ESPN, and FX throughout the day, along with any previously recorded content. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate the patience of our subscribers during negotiations.'
The blackout, which began on October 30, was the longest for Disney in recent memory. It occurred due to the inability to reach a mutual agreement before the expiration of their previous contract. This dispute mirrors a similar public disagreement between Disney and Charter Communications in 2023, though that blackout lasted only 11 days. Typically, distributors and channel providers find common ground to avoid blackouts, as demonstrated by YouTube TV's deal with Fox and NBCUniversal earlier this year. However, the NFL and college football often play a pivotal role in finalizing agreements, making this blackout, which included two Monday Night Football games, particularly surprising.
The blackout's impact on Disney's channel ratings was evident, with YouTube TV's substantial subscriber base of approximately 10 million. The financial aspects of the deal were a significant point of contention, involving Most Favored Nation clauses and rate adjustments based on YouTube TV's potential growth as the largest pay-TV provider in the U.S. Additionally, the rates for Disney's entertainment channels were a topic of discussion, considering the availability of their content through Disney+ or Hulu.
